I did it for 9 days with my dog, though she ran most of it. I had very little money to start but several people gave me money while on the road. In the U.S. no bakery would give the leftovers away and super markets lock their trash bins. Live food is harder to find; the US is huge and crops are regional sticking to small areas, like peaches in Georgia and corn in Wyoming and Ohio but there are large areas where nothing grows but trees. The Pacific northwest is a better choice since the growing season is long and lots of wild berries and apple trees line the roads.
