Correction: All five salmon species do NOT "spawn in large numbers in most Alaskan streams." Presently, Alaska is having the worst run of king salmon on record. The governor is seeking disaster relief. If you went to Alaska this year and bought a king stamp, you wasted your money. Almost every river you can name has been shut down: Kenai, Susitna, Deshka, Ninilchik, Yukon, Chignik, Kuskokwim, etc.

The runs of Chinook in Alaska are under severe strain. If ADF&G doesn't close the 2013 and 2014 seasons (as they probably should, and very may well), anglers are advised to stay away anyway. Not only is there a high likelihood that any fishing trip you plan will be quashed by an Emergency Order, the runs are so weak they just can't withstand any pressure.

Bottom Line: Don't bother going to Alaska for kings any time soon.

Google around for "Alaska kings." You'll see. It's bad. Real bad.

Great article, save one item. Alaska is the LAST frontier for many things. We have just begun to explore the FINAL frontier. I don't think we have caught a salmon there yet.
