		<description>Hi:  I was delighted to see this photo of my grandfather, William L. Brown, working on this hippo.  He spoke of it often in his later years.   We still visit the Smithsonian and see the few exhibits that remain of his work; of course the famed Bull Elephant and this hippo.   My grandfather told the story of how he was able to successfully tan the hide (apparently this had never been done successfully before).  A friend, who happened to be a jewish tanner, gave him a secret recipe for tanning the hide.  I guess it worked!</description>
