On December 7, 1941 my father, Robert B. Andrews, witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor first hand. He was aboard the USS Phoenix, the only vessel to escape the harbor during the bombing. He was 21 years old and this event made an indelible scar upon his soul. He spoke of it often and I came to appreciate and honor his experience. On September 11, 2001 I stood in a classroom in New Jersey while parents of my students were trapped in the World Trade Center, many escaped but some sadly lost their lives. These two events that are so monumental in our country's history link my father and me - not just as parent and child, but as Americans. Rest in peace, Dad. You are not forgotten on this day. God Bless America!
