Friday, April 2: The Running Fence Revisited

The American Art Museum will host the premiere of a new film created especially for the current exhibition, “Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Remembering the Running Fence.” This dynamic husband and wife duo are perhaps best known for their large-scale art installations where they wrapped anything and everything from islands in Miami’s Biscayne Bay to the Reichstag in Germany. (Some of you may remember that Jeanne-Claude passed away late last year.) The film tells the story of the making of Running Fence, a 24.5-mile installation that briefly graced the Marin and Sonoma county countryside in 1976. After the screening, director Wolfram Hissen and artist Christo will discuss the film. A book signing will follow. Free, but tickets are required. Free tickets will be distributed one hour before show time. There is a limit of 2 tickets per person. American Art Museum, 7:00 PM

Saturday, April 3: Tea Ceremony

Culturally, we seem to always be on the go—especially when it comes to eating out. When was the last time  you were at a Starbucks and took time to savor whatever it was you were drinking? Today at the Freer, stop and smell the roses—or the tea leaves, which is the case in today’s event. The Chado Urasenke Tankokai DC Association will demonstrate the Urasenke tradition of Chado, or “the Way of Tea,” an art- and philosophy-based method of preparing, serving, and drinking tea. Free. Sackler Gallery, 2:00 PM.

Sunday, April 4: Anime Artists Workshop

We see Japanese animation—popularly known as anime—everywhere, from movie theater screens to Saturday morning cartoons. Come on out to the Freer for an anime workshop where you’ll learn the origins of this art form and work with professional artists to perfect your own anime drawings and share your work with fellow enthusiasts. Free. Sackler Gallery, 2:00 PM.
