Louise Bourgeois's body of work has had such a pull on me that I travelled from Rhode Island to Washington last spring specifically to see her retrospective at the Hirshhorn.
The show did not disappoint; Louise's work is always such a combination of deep emotion, staggering honesty, and new twists on creativity. I have loved her sculpture from the wooden personnages and the femmes couteaux to the large and complex cells and the shocking Destruction of the Father-I loved being surprised and shocked by Louise.
I also particularly loved her prints and drawings, and I, as a mother and artist, felt a real kinship in viewing the Femme Maison, Woman/House, series.
Louise was a real inspiration to me and gives me hope, as a woman who is an artist over 50, that the best is yet to come.....
