Tuesday, July 6: FONZ Photo Club

If you’re a shutterbug with a penchant for snapping shots of critters, come on out to the National Zoo and participate in the FONZ (that’s Friends Of the National Zoo for those of you who were thinking Henry Winkler) photo club’s monthly meeting. Share your photos, hear from speakers and learn about new techniques that may help you capture that picture perfect moment. You must already be a FONZ member to participate. Wednesday, July 7: Ask an Expert: Assessing the Legacy of the Roswell Incident

In this lunchtime lecture, Roger Launius of the museum’s Space History Division will talk about the Roswell Incident where, in 1947, some people believed that debris from an alien spacecraft was discovered in the desert of New Mexico. Free. Air and Space Museum, 12:00 PM.

Thursday, July 8: Face-to-Face Portrait Talk: Andrew Jackson

It’s the face you see on $20 bills and bottles of Old Hickory—but what do you really know about Andrew Jackson? Get a little face time with the seventh president of the United States in this week’s portrait talk, led by historian Jim Barber. Free. National Portrait Gallery, 6:00-6:30 PM.

Friday, July 9: Two-Day Pony Express Festival

Saddle up for a two-day festival commemorating the 150th anniversary of the pony express! The family-friendly fun includes events and activities such as a trivia relay race, tall tales and an opportunity for you to star in a puppet show. This event repeats on Saturday, July 10. And also be sure to check out a piece on a rare pony express artifact featured in the May 2010 issue of Smithsonian magazine. Free. Postal Museum, 11:00 AM-5:00 PM.
