Statue of Liberty-West

Some fresh ridiculousness greeted me with my morning scan of the newspapers on Sunday. A former media mogul is proposing a plan for a monument to humanity, a bronze twice a tall as Niagara Falls.
The monument would be accompanied by a “museum of human history,” and the project would be realized next to the Port of Long Beach, near the Queen Mary. Price tag? $250 million.
Of course, Karen Tyler Barnes assured the LA Times that the complex could bring in as much as $500 million a year to the region. An affiliated think tank would tackle problems as varied as poverty, hunger, homelessness and education. “We need to find solutions to problems outside of war and violence,” Barnes told the Times. No taxpayer money has been pledged yet.
One thing’s for sure: That’s gotta be a pretty big museum.

I found the Monuement to Humanity concept to be the most exciting multi-purpose/meaning art project ever proposed in America, but the smart-aleck in me wondered if a phrase quite different from that on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me you’re downtrodden, blah, blah…” and of course, having the benefit of hindsite, couldn’t it read something like:
“Welcome to America, have fun while observing what 200 years of capitalist, social elitism, a disdain for environmental stewardship, and corporate trashing of Democracy have wrought on this otherwise beautiful county.
Please don’t entertain the idea of extending your visit to a permanent status, instead, take a few people back with you- we’re bursting at the seams as you will soon discover.”
Anyway, I think the “Statue of Liberty West” concept is a beautiful and worthy project!
