I would think that the mechanical pencil would have worked as well in space without the problem of shavings floating around. The space Pen, is, however, a great device - I have had one for decades.

The broken switch story relates to Apollo 11, NOT Apollo 13 AFAIK. The switch broke on the lunar landing module when the astronauts returned to the module. I don't know whether something similar happened to Apollo 13.

The new pens that Fisher claims will "write for a typical lifetime" are not the standard space pens with the standard space pen refill. Instead, they are particular models that hold substantially more of the same sort of pressurized ink. They are significantly more expensive and are not refillable with the standard cartridge. The latest version is the Infinium. This is all documented at the Fisher website: www.spacepen.com

AFAIK, as a user of these pens for many years, their recent marketing claims are highly accurate.

In the 1980's, Fisher Space Pen company gave a Space Pen to every Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper to use while on the job. They really came in handy working in the winter time up in Reno. I used to have to carry several pens inside my coat and had to swap them out while writing accident reports or tickets. The regular pens would get too cold to write. The Fisher Space Pens really worked well in those situations.
