I've come across that claim many times and have always been skeptical of it. While stop motion itself was new, audiences of the time had already been exposed to visual trickery. Look at Gertie the Dinosaur, which came out a decade earlier.

And as far as your Transformers comparison, let's be honest: if Michael Bay had directed The Lost World, there would have been a lot more explosions.

Conan Doyle was every bit as big a character as those he created. When I was a kid, whenever my dad offered to borrow films from the Seattle Library, I always shouted out for "The Lost World." I don't know how many times I watched it. The old, slow pace of the silent movie didn't bother me, all I was waiting for was a dinosaur or two. I'm still that way today. When's the next Jurassic Park movie due? Or perhaps Dinosaur Wars?
