Great suggestions - now I just need to hit the road again to try them all. Moose Drool is an old favorite from when I was lucky to live in Big Sky Brewing's hometown, Missoula, Montana; I'm glad you reminded me. I'm intrigued by the two separate thumbs-up for Magic Hat's #9... maybe I should try it again. But unsuspecting readers beware: those "apricot tones" Jennifer refers to are, well, let's just say they come through LOUD and CLEAR. If you aren't prepared for an apricot jam sandwich, you're not prepared for this beer. I wasn't, anyway.

If you do get to Magic Hat, try the #9 in a half & half with Guiness, a "Black Magic". The apricot-y tones go well with the denser Guiness flavors. Cheers & Happy New Year!

Since you're settling into the northeastern US, you should swing by one of my favorites - Magic Hat in Vermont. It's small, incredibly friendly, and they make a good range of brews. Plus you can get some skiing in while you're there. Highlights include the Single Chair, an English Ale; Jinx which is strong and nice in winter, and the #9 (whose apricot tones may offend some).

We all love beer! Fun story.

My suggestion for December 2008 is Nimbus' Brown Ale. Around summertime I became a regular consumer of the Moose Drool Brown Ale by Big Sky Brewing Company, but when I came across Nimbus in a local La Jolla liquor store I was stoked to see they had a brown ale (which are more or less rarer than the more standard varieties of beer). It is currently my favorite brown on the market.

Bottoms up.

I think December's beer would have to be Thailand's fearsome "Beer Chang". Brewed a bit stronger than Thailand's well-known Singha beer, it features the most flavorful taste of any tropical lager I've encountered, with none of the slightly acrid fizzyness that usually accompanies. Served ice cold (or, if not, over ice), it is sure to take the edge of the one-too-many-spoonfuls of phrik naam plaa that you heaped on your curry...

Great story! When you and others are looking to find these craft breweries or need custom beer maps made from around the U.S. and Canada, check out www.pubquest.com.

Cheers!

Nice 2008 roundup! I think my favorite December beer would have to be the Sam Adams Chocolate Bock. Really, really nice. The big bottle is a little pricey, but its worth it I think! Happy '09!
