When I came up with the idea of throwing fruitcakes in Manitou Springs 15 years ago, I never imagined the event would be recognized by Smithsonian. I am deeply honored and I still do not like fruitbcake.

I LOVE fruitcake -- but not the sickening sweet versions with "fake-looking" glaceed fruits in them. I love the homemade version that is packed full of raisins, currants, sultanas and natural-colored candied peel and seasoned with mixed spice and a heavy dose of brandy. This, with a perfect cup of tea, is one of the best Christmas treats ever! And I've just finished a small slice of Christmas pudding (which is the next best thing) with this morning's tea.

I live by the motto: Regift, Reuse, Recycle. Make sure that the cycle doesn't stop with you.

Fruitcake, being twice as dense as lead, and three times as heavy, is a sturdy and plentiful construction material. We're building our new recycling warehouse out of fruitcake. Because it repels water and withstands the elements, it will be a structure more permanent than brick or stone.
