The beautiful, old, large, well-established working garden is the centerpiece of the Lincoln School in Olympia, Washington. Children from other neighborhoods throughout the city participate in a yearly lottery drawing to attend. Each elementary class plants its crop in the spring, harvests in the fall, and cooks its own specialty for the school's Harvest Festival. Students from local colleges help weed and feed in the summer, and the garden contributes what it can to the local Food Bank. The garden also provides lots of "food for thought" for science classes.

This sounds like a great project- and way to go DC on your work for healthy schools- but school gardens are much more popular than the this piece makes them sound. We have more than 2000 school gardens in California alone! The state's Department of Education funded 3849 of them back in 2008. And there are many more schools that have gardens independently of that program.

School gardens are a good education tool...and i hope these outdoor classrooms sprout up everywhere!

Thanks for this article! It is good to read about a garden program in the schools. I have worked with kids that have never seen many of the fresh vegetables we take for granted.
If we want to encourage healthy eating...this is a great way to do it.
