As a server, I am horrified by this story. This doesn't sound like it should be a story from the guest's point of view but rather a manager or server's tale of terror. You didn't ask about the price of the off-menu items you were ordering and then tried to walk out on a bill when it came? Your friends were going to blackmail the restaurant because several of you drank when you weren't of legal age which, while some of the blame is on the restaurant for not carding, is also deceptive and illegal on your part? Your friend threatened to assault a server with an eating utensil after he tried to stop you from walking out on your bill?

And this is supposed to be FUNNY???

This is just a perfect example of how little respect people in the service industry get and how things that happen to us that are horrifying examples of unconscionably bad behavior all get excused. People think it is okay to treat servers terribly because we are somehow less than human beings and don't deserve the same respect as other professionals. It's shameful and I'm honestly a bit disappointed that the Smithsonian would have a hand in this.
