I had GD when I was pregnant at age 37. It was tough at first but got easier. Unfortunately my morning spike was so high I was limited to 5g of carbs for breakfast. That was really tough and I ended up eating a lot of eggs and drinking low carb Atkins shakes.

Insulin regulation becomes tougher as the pregnancy progresses, and you may find yourself needing to adjust your carb intake. I ended up having to go on insulin a few weeks after I was diagnosed, and then as the weeks progressed my dose increased. I could also physically feel when I'd had more carbs than I could safely handle - my head felt funny, and I had an awful, sick feeling.

On the upside, I had a lot of "issues" with meat and chicken textures while I was pregnant so going low carb really forced me to eat veggies when I probably would have reached for bread if I didn't have GD.

I ended up with a 6 pound 8 ounce baby who did spend a few hours in NICU for blood sugar monitoring, but no diabetes for her, nor for me two years later.

This is good advice for all of us, so thanks for sharing. (I didn't know that blood sugar levels tend to spike in the morning -- think I'll start eating more yogurt and less cereal.) Wishing you a wonderful and healthy pregnancy!
