I find it sad, and rather annoying, that the only way you refer to Earnest Shackleton is as 'the ill-equipped British adventurer'. He was a great man, ahead of his time, and an inspirational leader whose courage and endurance were of Epic proportions. Just wait...one day Hollywood will make a movie of his exploits, except of course they will change the facts for US audiences and make him into 'the no-nonsense American frontiersman'. :)

I'd just like to drink a toast with it- To Ernest Shackleton, and the men of his crew, and especially those of the James Caird. You've all been my hero's since boyhood. I hope school children still read of these men today.
And while I'm at it, I'll drink a toast to Robert Scott and those brave men who perished with him.
And another to Roald Amunsdsen. Well done Mate.
And one for those poor Welsh mine ponies.
Oh, and one to the sled dogs.
And the ships, Discovery and Endurance.
And.....oh hell, just give me the bottle.
