Bazalgette

Sir Joseph Bazalgette was responsible for what were arguably the most important civil engineering works completed in London during the nineteenth century. His new sewage system cleared the Thames of filth and saved the city from stench and worse, as well as providing London with a new landmark: the Embankment, which still runs along theThames, was built to cover over Bazalgette's new super-sewers as they carried the city's effluent safely east towards the sea.
