" A lie repeated 100 times becomes the truth"
I don't see the point in repeating this slander here — much peddled by Ruth D Edwards and Kevin Myers — just for 'balance' But if the above quotation is true — then the lie must be true.

Gilbert, I find it unclear when you say "the two were not in the same place at the same time." Meaning perhaps Lahiff and Markievicz? I'm not studied on this incident, only passing along what seems to be a commonly accepted and conveyed thread of Markievicz' role on Easter Monday. It would seem that Lahiff's family quickly came to blame the Countess, as seen by a post by a descendant of Lahiff's available on the Internet. I'll ask some colleagues to shed some light on this, to better determine whether the Lahiff story is urban legend or has a basis in reality. At any rate, I'm glad you agree that it would be better to acknowledge the Lahiff story as part, at least, of the Countess' 'mythology.'

Gerry, that assertion probably deserves mention, but there was testimony given to the Bureau of Military History by a physician, confirming Markievicz's presence at City Hall at the time of Lahiff's shooting at the Green, and she was never charged. The books I looked at seemed to conclude the two were not in the same place at the time.

This otherwise laudable article seems incomplete in omitting the oft-repeated assertion that Markievicz shot and killed an unarmed policeman at the Green's Traitors Gate. The officer, Michael Lahiff, had rudely, and unwisely, refused her order that he hand over the keys for the locked gate.
