Peter the Great

Charles's great rival, Peter the Great of Russia, gained most from the outcome of the Great Northern War. The Treaty of Nystad (1721) transferred Estonia and Livonia to Russian control and gave the country an outlet on the Baltic for the first time. From Peter's time, a country that had been "east-facing" for centuries became increasingly focused on the west.
