Major Taylor was amazing. My whole young life my grandfather would speak of Major Taylor and how he would bike like the wind and never got the credit he deserved. Inspiration to go beyond and just ride with dignity.

What a superb story! Worth every second you spent researching and writing it, as far as I'm concerned. I'm an avid cyclist but had never heard of Marshall Taylor. Thanks.

It's great that Taylor is getting more recognition. He's still not as respected as he should be. But to say that he is an unknown - well, maybe unknown to non cyclists. But a legend among today's track racers.

Major Taylor is not completely unknown or forgotten in Indianapolis. The Major Taylor Velodrome, constructed in Indianapolis for the 1987 Pan Am Games, continues to host a full racing season from April through September, as well as intro, training, and practice events for cyclists.

I only wish I could cite every worthwhile source or book published on each topic that I write about. I'm sure Mr. Balf's book is excellent, and I regret not having read it. I can assure you that its omission was a matter of availability at the time I was working on this story, and not because it wasn't worthy of mention. Invariably, after these Past Imperfect pieces are published, we receive comments from readers, and even authors themselves, who remind us that there are other books on the subject. These comments would be more beneficial to everyone if they cited something from these omitted books and furthered the discussion on the story, rather than just mentioning the book and pointing out our research shortcomings.

Amazingly, this article does not cite the best book on Major Taylor, one written recently by Todd Balf entitled: Major: A Black Athlete, a White Era, and the Fight to Be the World's Fastest Human Being. The writer of this article really needs to do better research!
