Omdurman

The Battle of Omdurman, fought between British and Sudanese forces in September 1898, was one of the first to show the disappointing gap between image and reality. Top: an artist's impression of the charge of the 11th Lancers at the height of the battle. Bottom: a photograph of the (distant) action as captured by an enterprising photographer.
