Don’t Curse the Darkness, Get One of the Bright New Lights

Some may be bothered that not everyone at an Apple Genius Bar is really a genius. Or that sliced bread is no longer a standard of greatness. What irks my wife is Eastern Standard Time.

All weekend, when TV anchors reminded us to set the clocks back, what I heard was “another hour of sleep.” What she heard was, “Come to the dark side.”

I’m sure she’s not the only person unhappy to have it feel that it now gets dark right after lunch. A new study, in fact, found that this begins the time of year when people start to avoid taking financial risks; other research says the time shift even gets to pets.

But I will not curse the darkness. Rather I say we should celebrate our renewed relationship with artificial light, particularly because we’re entering into a watershed winter, the beginning of the end for the incandescent bulb.

On New Year’s Day, the ban on producing 100-watt incandescent bulbs kicks in, the first wave of the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA), which will also phase out lower-wattage bulbs over the next few years. Incandescent bulbs, revolutionary in their day, are one of the more inefficient inventions of the past century—90 percent of the energy they use goes to creating heat and only 10 percent produces light. So, many people, including light bulb manufacturers and President George Bush, thought banning the bulbs was a good idea when the law passed in 2007. (Apparently so does the Chinese government; it announced over the weekend that it will start phasing out incandescent bulbs next fall.)

Since then, however, critics have painted the federal ban as the epitome of the “nanny state,” preachy bureaucrats telling Americans what’s good for them. And so far the public hasn’t shown a lot of love for the replacement bulbs—the curlicued compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) that, while five times more efficient and likely to last at least six times longer than incandescents, have a flickering reputation. They take longer to brighten and even then, many people find the hue too cool. Not all of them work well with dimmers, and when they break they require more care to clean up because of the mercury inside.

Enter the 21st century light bulb

Bottom line, though, is that CFLs are more likely to be a phase we go through on our way to light-emitting diodes, better known as LEDs. Now those are 21st century light bulbs—consuming one-tenth the energy of incandescents, but able to last 50 times longer. Of course, there’s the matter of the price. These are not times when people want to hear about $20 light bulbs.  Understood. But some experts think the price could drop under $10 in a few years.  And keep in mind, you’ll probably change the oil in your car a dozen times or more before you’ll have to change an LED bulb. 

Not only will LEDs change how we view bulbs, they’ll change how we view lighting. A company called Nth Degree Technologies is producing lights that look like glowing sheets of paper and can actually be wrapped around curved surfaces. On a much larger scale is City Touch, a system developed by Phillips in which LED lighting in a city automatically adjusts to weather, traffic and people walking by at night. Phillips claims it could cut urban lighting costs by 70 percent.

Have a problem with jet lag? LED lights can help with that, too. They’re being programmed in airplane cabins on transcontinental flights to smooth the circadian rhythms of passengers.

    Anything that means the bulbs need to be replaced less often gets my vote. As long as my klutz genes don’t break them on their way to the fixture! Smashing a 40 cent bulb doesn’t create the pain that smashing a $20 one would. And since your charming wife and I both rue the darkness of winter, the new techno-lights that keep us upbeat during the long and dreary winter are priceless.

    I need at least 100 watt light bulbs to read by. Where are the 100 watt LEDs??

      Jean: Part of adjustment we’ll have to make is that the newer bulbs–CFLs and LEDs–are measured in lumens, not watts. So there is no 100-watt LED. But the light from a 1,600-lumens bulb is roughly equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent bulb.

    We are installing recessed LED lights in our living room as we speak, with brighter lights and a huge reduction in wattage. Cans that used to draw 75 watts now draw only 13.

    Three downsides, though:
    1. It was hard to find the right color LED bulb — 2700K is warmer than 3000K, but still too cool compared with an incandescent bulb.
    2. Although the LED bulbs are indeed dimmable, you need a special LED-compatible dimmer. The old dimmer we had promptly burned out.
    3. When you dim LED lights (at least the ones we bought), the lowest setting is still too bright. When I turned down the LEDs, I was hoping for a candlelight glow. Instead, I’ve almost got a surgical suite.

    Manufacturers of dimmable LEDs should tell you the range of lumens on the package — not just how high, but also how low.

    Dimming control manufacturers are starting to make dimmers that work with the new low wattage sources. Look to the Lighting control leaders now for this technology.
    The lumen argument re: 100w equivalents is valid only with respect to the directionality of LED sources. Using a 1600 lumen LED screw-in in place of a 100w incandescent in the average table lamp will not yield the light output that enable you to read small print. LED’s, also known as solid state lighting require sophisticated thermal management to protect their circuitry. So far, the best LED replacement lamps can do is a 60 watt equivalent. Wait 6-12 months and they may be up to a 100w version. Better yet, use LED task lights that are designed to project all their light output where it’s needed rather than forcing it into an edison-screw lamp envelope.

  5. Great post Randy! As someone who works for an LED lighting company and more importantly, believes in technology that can reduce our energy consumption, the LED lamps are a great alternative.

    However, as the comments indicate here, a good chunk of the product coming in is not properly tested and lacks in performance. Before you do decide to buy LED lights make sure you have compared all the possible options and ask as many questions as possible, this way you can narrow down good quality product versus junk. And of course, do not always settle for a cheaper price. Top quality bulbs, that hoold to their claims of 40, 000 hours of lifespan and high lumen output are usually pricier than CFLS, halogens and incandescent bulbs.
