I’m sure there are people who enjoy working out. I just don’t know many of them.
So, no doubt, the people I do know would be thrilled to hear that scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in Florida have made progress in developing a pill that mimics the effects of exercise. Get this: Mice injected with a particular chemical compound lost weight, lowered their cholesterol and expended more energy. And not only did all this occur while they were on a high-fat diet, they also actually were lazier and less active than they had been before they received any injections.
Sounds like magic in a bottle.
Alas, there are caveats. No one, for instance, knows how the human body would react to the compound or what risks it might bring. And the researchers themselves aren’t certain that it’s possible to create any pill that can come close to replicating all of the complex effects and benefits of true physical exercise.
Back to the grind.
The problem is that the fitness business has never been one to crackle with innovation. You can switch the soundtrack or pump up the volume or change the instructor’s outfit, but in the end, there are only so many ways you can run and step and spin.
Still, wearable sensors like the Nike+ Fuelband or Jawbone UP, are starting to make the gathering of data as much a part of exercise as sweating without shame. And now that interplay of workouts and stats-tracking is being taken to another level in a different kind of fitness center, one that its backers want to become the Apple store of health clubs.
That’s some ambition, particularly since pretty much the only equipment inside these clubs will be a line of skinny little walls. Each wall, called a Fitwall, is seven feet tall and has four stationary rungs that serve as footholds and four hand grips. It’s designed for what’s known as “vertical training”–which means you can do all kinds of exercises while you’re hanging from the wall–a “perfect pullup,” for instance, or something named the “cowboy squat.”
Still, this does not a fitness revolution make, right?
Okay, but then you add the data layer. Before he or she gets get on a wall to begin the group workout, each person straps a wearable Bluetooth monitor over their chest. This transmits data throughout the session to an iPad connected to the top of each Fitwall. And that allows each “athlete”–that’s what you’re called here, rather than member–to see how he’s doing compared to past workouts or how he stacks up against people on the walls nearby. To add a gaming element, the data is calibrated, or graded on a curve, so that a white-haired guy can compete with a 22-year-old workout warrior on the next wall.
Bring on the coconut water
But wait, there’s more. The goal is to create an experience unique enough that Fitwall will come to mean more than the thing you hang on. So there’s no front desk with a zesty greeter; each person instead checks in on an iPad, where his or her data is stored. And, apparently, no club will have more than 16 Fitwalls, meaning that counting instructors, there should never be more than a dozen and a half people in the club at one time. When each 40-minute workout is over, the trainers go over everyone’s results, then the session is wrapped with a celebratory shot of coconut water and chilled towels–scented with mint and lavender– all around.
You might say this is not for everyone and you’d be right. It’s no accident that the first Fitwall opened earlier this summer in relentlessly chic La Jolla, California, with more to follow soon in the LA area. Next year, Fitwall plans to tackle Manhattan.
But even if less trendy markets don’t embrace the full Fitwall experience, the company does seem to be on to something, with its infusion of real-time data and body-to-body competition into workout routines. At the very least, it’s something different.
Says Josh Weinstein, one of the Fitwall’s main investors:
“There are so many products out there in the fitness industry that I would call ‘me too’ products. It’s yoga–but with heat. It’s spinning–but the music is louder. There’s so little innovation in the industry and that frustrates us, not just as entrepreneurs, but also people who have a passion for working out.”
Or you can hold out for the pill.

- Or about long enough to chow down an order of fries: According to researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, four-minute bursts of intense physical activity three times a week is enough for a person to stay fit. A total of 12 minutes of vigorous exercising, they said, was enough to elevate oxygen intake levels, plus lower blood pressure and glucose levels.
- Burn, baby, burn: Japanese scientists have developed a pocket-sized sensor that can tell you if your body is really burning away fat. After a person breathes into the device, it provides a reading of acetone levels in your blood. Acetone is produced when fat is broken down.
- Unless, of course, the thought of exercise gives you stress: And there’s more evidence that physical activity reduces stress. Scientists at Princeton University found that exercise reorganizes the brain so that its response to stress is reduced and anxiety is less likely to interfere with normal brain function. When mice allowed to exercise regularly experienced a stressor — in this case, exposure to cold water — their brains showed a spike in the activity of neurons that shut off excitement in the hippocampus, a region of the brain that regulates anxiety.
- It’s always something: So much for resveratrol, the antioxidant found in red wine, being a magical compound that can help fight aging. Oh, it may still be able to do that, but a new study at the University of Copenhagen has found that for older men, resveratrol can undercut how much good exercise is doing hem.
- Drinking sweat–the final frontier: Well, it’s about time. Swedish scientists have invented a machine that turns sweat into good old water you can drink. The device spins and heats sweaty clothes to remove the moisture, then runs it through a filter that allows only water molecules to pass. While the researchers pointed out that their liquid was cleaner than the local tap water, they also acknowledged that people don’t really sweat all that much.

Voice recognition software, most of us would probably agree, is a pretty cool thing. But the talking to machines part–be it smartphone, TV screen or dashboard–well, not so much. Asking advice of a device? Reeks of geek. Enunciating each word so you can be understood? How cool can you really be?
But Apple, true to form, has taken this head on by hiring three icons of cool to star in their latest ad campaign for Siri, the voice of the iPhone 4S. There’s Zooey Deschanel (Adorable Cool) and John Malkovich (Cerebral Cool) and Samuel L. Jackson (Ultimate Cool), and all make engaging in wordplay a with a phone seem the sport of gods.
Critics, nonetheless, point out that in real life, Siri is neither as responsive nor all-knowing as she’s portrayed in commercials. You, too, I’m sure, are shocked to hear this. Others see the whole thing as ripe for parody–see Zooey’s brother Jooey do a Funny or Die version of Zooey’s and Siri’s rainy day together.
No matter. Siri has become a lead singer in the robot chorus, the “You Got Mail” voice of a new generation.
It is fashionable in some circles to suggest that Siri isn’t Steve Jobs-worthy, that if he were still alive, Jobs would have pulled it off the market or, at the very least, never would have approved such a high-profile ad campaign for so flawed a product.
But as Jobs’ successor, Tim Cook, said earlier this week, iPhone 4S owners like Siri. According to a survey released in March, almost 90 percent say they use it at least once a month. And keep in mind that Siri, one of the very few Apple products said to be in beta when it was released, won’t celebrate her first birthday until October. She’s still learning language and, even more importantly, just beginning to tap the potential of artificial intelligence.
Siri will likely be a centerpiece of Apple TV, expected to make its debut in December. But chances are, the place where talking to machines will go mainstream is in our cars.
Drive, she said
Sure, that’s already happening, but you still have to switch to robot speak if you want to be understood. And even then there’s no guarantee. That will start to change this summer when some new models will come equipped with something called Dragon Drive!
It’s the invention of Nuance Communications, a Massachusetts-based company that’s become a powerhouse in the voice recognition business. (It’s widely believed to be the brains behind Siri.) Nuance and voice recognition in cars took a big leap forward last week when the firm announced that Dragon Drive! will be able to tap into the cloud.
What this means is that the system will dramatically ramp up its computing power and memory capability. And that means that the voice in your dashboard will become more Siri-like and allow you to actually converse with it. No more monosyllabic shouting. The day is coming when you’ll be able to casually mention that you feel like some Allman Brothers and seconds later “Whipping Post” will come pumping through the speakers.
The key is how well we’re able to teach machines context and pragmatics–how language is used in social situations. And that’s tricky business. For starters, even the most sophisticated voice recognition device needs to wait for a human to finish speaking so it’s able to parse and interpret the whole sentence. Then there’s the “theory of mind,” the ability to understand that other people can have different beliefs and intentions than our own. As far as we know, only humans can do this.
A recent study by two Stanford psychologists can give you a sense of what’s involved in helping machines intuit. Researchers Michael Frank and Noah Goodman set up an online experiment in which participants were asked to look at a set of objects and then select which one was being referred to be a particular word. For instance, one group of participants saw a blue square, a blue circle and a red square. The question for that group was: Imagine you are talking to someone and you want to refer to the middle object. Which word would you use, “blue” or “circle”?
The other group was asked: Imagine someone is talking to you and uses the word “blue” to refer to one of these objects. Which object are they talking about?
The responses helped the researchers get a clearer picture of how a listener understands a speaker and how a speaker decides what to say. From that, they developed the kind of mathematical model that can expand and refine a computer’s thought process.
Said Frank: “It will take years of work but the dream is of a computer that really is thinking about what you want and what you mean rather than just what you said.”
A manner of speech
Here are some more recent developments in voice recognition:
- Siri goes silent: IBM tends to be real nervous about corporate secrets from getting out, so it now forbids its employees from using public file transfer sites, such as Dropbox. But it also has a ban on the use of Siri in the office because security execs worry that someone, while talking to their phone, could reveal sensitive info that ends up on Apple’s servers.
- Take that, Apple!: Samsung launched its new Galaxy X III smartphone in London this week, and while its big touchscreen is getting a lot of attention, it also features new voice and face recognition software.
- Do what I say, not what I do: And Samsung’s not stopping there. It recently filed a patent application for a robot that understands human speech. The robot would be able to adjust its “listening” capabilities to take into account ambient noise that might interrupt or disrupt commands it’s been given. It would also be able to recognize who’s speaking to it, even if the background noise is very loud.

Last spring, when he was still Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates told cadets at the Air Force Academy that they needed to “shed the nostalgia” for “air-to-air combat and strategic bombing.” Not that they were surprised, but they weren’t exactly tickled, either. Because in all the times they had watched “Top Gun,” not once did Tom Cruise turn into a “joystick pilot.”
It’s one of the not-so-affectionate terms they have for someone who remotely operates an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), otherwise known as a drone. That’s in the cards for more and more pilot wannabes these days, now that drones have become the muscle in the war on terrorists.
There are now as many as 7,000 drones in service; apparently manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand. Most are used for surveillance, but increasingly they’re the weapon of choice for killing suspected terrorists, and not just in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but also in Somalia and Yemen.
This has raised all kinds of questions–from whether targeted killings from the sky, in any country we choose, are legitimate, to whether drones make war too antiseptic, to when do we start selling them to other countries. And once you begin to talk about where drone warfare is headed, things get a whole lot dicier.
It’s inevitable, say some experts, that drones and other military robots will become autonomous to the point where they’ll be making decisions in combat. What kind of decisions? A recent Washington Post article laid out a scenario in which drones search for a human target, make an identification based on facial-recognition software, then finish the job with a missile strike.
This is known as “lethal autonomy,” a concept that conjures up images of swarming Terminators without the accent. Not necessarily, argues Ronald Arkin, a scientist who has actually done a study for the Defense Department on whether robots can learn battlefield ethics. He thinks it will one day be possible to program machines to return fire at an appropriate level, minimize collateral damage, even recognize when someone wants to surrender.
Until then, we’re likely to see more robots controlled by fewer humans, say a convoy of robot vehicles following a lead truck driven by a human, or a flock of aerial robots flying in tandem with manned fighters.
The Navy is taking the plunge, too. It just ordered 28 helicopter drones that can take off and land on a ship.
Meanwhile, on the homefront
Drones are used for surveillance along the Mexican and Canadian borders, but you won’t see them anywhere else in the U.S. At least not yet. But the Federal Aviation Administration, which has blocked commercial drones because they can’t sense other aircraft, may soon allow them in a few states on a trial basis. And that could open the floodgates.
- Sky spies: Police departments are chomping at the bit to get eyes in the sky, although as Brookings Institution researcher Peter Singer puts it, “That’s a Supreme Court case waiting to happen.”
- Counting cows: Two Montana universities will soon begin a trial project in which drones will be used to track cattle and analyze crops from above.
- Farmer optional: Last month an Iowa company unveiled a tractor that can roll across the fields without a driver.
- Revenge of the paparazzi: Celebrity photo services can’t wait for the day when they can send up drones to snap away at private parties of the stars. Let’s give it up for science.
