He brings the boy with him to meetings with the people he manipulates to seem more like a family man. So his "hapless son" isn't really his son at all. And the quote you chose was in a dialog with the preacher, not his son, at the end. It won academy awards and Franklin and Brown produced an directed a great film on the film shoot. Gergory Peck and Jane Wynman were great as was the young lad Claude Jarman.
