Welles had planned "Heart of Darkness" as his first feature but was unable to find financing and made "Kane". Would have loved to see the film!

One might also point to Terry Gilliam's "Who Killed Don Quixote?", though there are signs that the project may be revived. The first attempt ended after the star suffered repeated injuries and illness, in addition to flooding which destroyed most of the outdoor set.

Not one of Erich Von Stroheim's concepts made it to the screen as the director envisioned them. The same is true of most of the efforts of D.W. Griffith.

Many of Orson Welles' films, notably "The Magnificent Ambersons", were butchered by the studio or outright taken away from him.

We could also add Alfred Hitchcock's final project, "The Short Night", to the list. The script was in progress when Hitchcock became too ill to continue working. Hitchcock also had a number of ideas for scenes that he never found a movie to place them in. He also made an abortive attempt at filming "The Wreck Of The Mary Deare", though the project never got beyond the preliminary stages.

It's trivial in comparison to these five but it looks like "The War Magician" may never appear, either. Or, maybe, it will appear in 2014 (as indicated by IMDB.) Good story - some fact, lot's of fiction.
