If you want a truly stateless society you will have to come to terms with "an eye for an eye". We all know the quote about "an eye for an eye and we are all blind" but that isn't really true. It assumes that one is obligated to take an eye but in reality, most people will accept compensation for wrongs or even just turn the other cheek--only going for full vengeance in egregious cases. The psychopath would be more likely to get involved in wronging people and would be more likely to be subject to revenge while people who forgive easily will have the social network to back them up in disputes.

Over time, people become more polite, hospitable and respectful which, despite Hollywood's propaganda, is what you see remaining in the Old West states--southern hospitality, sense of honour, respect for property and... guns.

"What Libertarians did do is use the dialogue generated to remove substantial regulation that brought about the internet, home computers, the co-op and condo boom, and current long-term space efforts in conjunction with NASA"

So substantial regulation brought about the internet, home computers, etc.?

"Let’s face it. Your world is falling apart. Politicians engaging nations in wars against the will of the people. Increasing worldwide poverty and starvation. Inflation, high unemployment, staggering crime rates. Skyrocketing costs of nationalized health care. Overpopulation. Inability to meet your energy needs. Bankrupt cities, bankrupt states, bankrupt nations and morally bankrupt people."
Got it in one.

Deep Space Industries

and

Planetary Resources
http://www.planetaryresources.com/

They are both going to mine asteroids...

DSI says it will be there when the first Solar Power Satellites and Space Colonies are being built...

Perhaps Gerard K. O'Neill's dreams will be realized?
On this film he was an advisor and was based on his book

I remember seeing this film back in the day. At the time I was publishing "The Minnesota Libertarian" for the Minnesota LP and had a newsletter exchange with many other LP newsletters, libertarian publications, magazine subscriptions, and contacted libertarians all over the country about running advertising in the Minnesota Libertarian, so I became very familiar with the rise of the freedom movement back then. I never became famous (or infamous) myself but I'm still active in the movement, publishing the "Libertarian News Examiner" and "Dallas Libertarian Examiner." Great fun to see this again!

Thanks for the article. The Smithsonian should do some simple basic rerearch and not get core facts or terminology wrong.

We consulted on the Libra film. The colony portayed while libertarian-based is not Libertarian, and the same applies for similar communities from Beck's proposals to a condominium in Florida: Lib-based, not Libertarian. What Libertarians did do is use the dialogue generated to remove substantial regulation that brought about the internet, home computers, the co-op and condo boom, and current long-term space efforts in conjunction with NASA, which now is privatizing.

These are referenced at our site. LIO also registers Libertarian-direction communities and has an official Libertarian eco-community network/project.

For info on people using voluntary Libertarian tools on similar and other issues worldwide, please see the non-partisan Libertarian International Organization @ http://www.Libertarian-International.org ....

Yep, nothing says the future like space colonies. I was one of
those Gerard K. ONeill fans back in the day. Of course ONeill was working under the assumption that the colony start up would be government financed (with tech from the shuttle program) , but that hasn't worked out so well. The dream of privately financed human space flight still lives on with companies like SpaceX and Virgin Galactic. There are more than a few would be D. D. Harrimans out there.
