I never understood why Mom's home remedy for canker sores was alum, but I know it works. A link in Day 1's article gives a plausible explanation for why alum is effective as an adjuvant in vaccines. The mechanism - alum stimulates inflammasomes which release cytokines which signal immune cells to fight infection - could be the same when alum is applied to canker sores. I'm continually amazed by our world.
