Ebbesmeyer means that we can sea those eddies today from earth-orbiting satellites, though not the debris from the 1861-62 flood (because that would be silly).

OK, I may be behind the time, but we had weather satellites in the 1800′s?

Phenomena is plural, phenomenon is singular. Floating islands are fairly common phenomena, or a fairly common phenomenon.
