@Sara, my bet for the animals you saw in Florida is nutria, a much smaller animal. They are all over the southern states and into Texas.

Paso Robles is nowhere near Los Angeles. I realize it may make no difference to the general public, but accuracy should be important in a Science blog. If you wanted to be closer to the truth and have a catchy byline, the article should say the capy is on the loose in San Francisco.

Funny...I know for a fact there's a small population of capybaras in north central Florida. I've seen wild capybara in the marshy pond areas of San Felasco preserve (a state park in Gainesville). It has been a couple of years since I've seen them, but the last time I went trail riding on my horse, he was spooked by a couple rustling around the edge of a pond. Nobody really bothers them, and they don't really bother anybody. But they are cute little buggers, that's for sure.

Sadly, Paso Robles is nowhere near (or perhaps fortunately?) Los Angeles. http://bit.ly/mRD0KW We'd love to invite him over for dinner, though.

Paso Robles is 1/2 way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, a good 3-4 hour drive between each.
