I became interested in aerospace when Sputnik was launched and I was in high school. Working with friends we built a rocket to answer the Russians. We had to answer to the fire department and our parents as our rocket rose to an elevation of about 5 feet and caused the woods to catch fire. I remained interested in aerospace. When in college I was a member of the American Rocket Society. After graduation, I worked for a small aerospace company developing materials for passive communications satellites for NASA. While we know what happened to passive communications satellites. Nonetheless I have always remained enthusiastic about our aerospace endeavors after developing over 20 products and some 50 years later I am just as excited about Curiosity as if I were just graduating from college.

I still remember reading a science fiction book about landing on Mars and what was found there when I was in high school 60 years ago. Fiction then! It stirred great imaginative visions then, and now, I have created a series of collage/watermedia paintings celebrating the great achievements of the historical events of space explorations. How wonderful it has been to witness the fiction of my youth become reality!

As one of the many system and subsystem "managers" on Viking, back in '76, I know what you are going through right now; been there, done that. We did develope a pretty good technique for getting the payload from orbit to the proximity of the surface; you're still using it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - hope your sky-crane works as advertised!

I recall my participation in another landing (well crash) on the moon back in the 60's. I worked at General Precision and JPL asked us to make a video scan converter that would display on NTSC TV the 1 frame per 6 seconds scan of the Ranger satellites used to survey potential moon landing sites for Apollo. I was the technician that wired the electronics to show the Ranger crashing into the moon on live television. I remember how excited I was to see the live coverage. I can well imagine the tension and excitement of Curiosity team right now.

Can't wait to see the footage of the landing tomorrow! It will be exciting read about the findings this rover will bring to the table. Great article!

One of the most incredible engineering projects I have ever seen. I hope all systems are GO! and the craft lands safely and sends the data we are all hoping for.
