Tinnitus is one of the worse things to go through over & over.

As for applause, it is one of the most irritating thing for me to endure, same goes for whistling. I hate them both, they make me wish I was fully deaf.

I agree crickets are incredibly annoying. If there's one in my apartment chirping I'll tear the whole place apart looking for it and can't sleep until I find it. The rest don't bother me very much.

I am simply shocked that nagging wives/girlfriends/spouses didn't make the list and didn't make number one. Then again, if we admitted it was annoying to listen to, we wouldn't have the deniability of being able to say, Sorry dear, I didn't hear you."

Maybe you should address the frequency of the sounds instead of just what made the sounds.

I tottaly agree with Susan D. Martin above. Dog Barking is THE most annoying form of sound, actually noise, for a huge and growing number of people nowadays. City Representatives, Animal Services, Police... are constantly flooded with complaints from barking noise, which is more than just noise.
It affects humans health directly, by a condition called hyperacusis -- decreased sound tolerance or a collapse of tolerance to sound -- created by chronic exposure to neighborhood barking dogs and other types of short impulse noise. It's a long and quite interesting issue. You may find more about it at http://www.anilak.com/barking-dogs/

Barking dogs--especially those shrill little yappers that are so prevalent these days--are incredibly annoying to me. WHY do people find it necessary to take their dogs with them everywhere they go, only to leave them in the vehicle or tied up in front of a business to bark, shriek, yap and howl? Dogs left alone in the house/apartment or yard with no interaction with their owners and that bark incessantly as a result are another problem...if people can't understand that dogs need more than food and water, they should NOT get one!
I also find squeaking styrofoam irritating, along with car alarms...

Cardboard. When someone strokes or rubs touches cardboard or styrofoam. That is the most annoying and aggravating noise I have ever heard.

eeeh... Numbers 1 through 5 are pretty much the same and interchangeable.. If this is the way to go about it I could add at least another 20 items to that list..

Soundwise ALL these 'annoying' sounds have something in common, these are high pitched sounds and their short waves have an effect on the workings of your inner-ear, low pitched sounds have a much larger wavelength and will hardly effect this part of your ear, if at all.

The most annoying sound is definitely a professional soundbarrier.
Although it is not harmful to the hearing, it is unbearable and distracting.
