Could be a wild dog, there are more types of wild dog than there are types of wolf. (Wild, not feral.)
Besides that, a wolf is just a big dog with more teeth.

Peter--the way I understood the article, this dog-evolved-from-wolf could have gone extinct but may have evolved along the same path & with the same changes as later dogs-evolved-from-wolves. This means it would be very similar to modern dogs, because the method of domestication (which produced the changes) probably didn't change much between 100,000 years ago and 10,000 years go.

If this ancient breed of dogs went extinct why would its DNA be more similar to DNA of contemporary dogs, allegedly altogether different evolutionary branch, than to DNA of the wolves? Shouldn't it be the other way around due to DNA divergence from wolves into different dog evolutionary branches?
