Interesting article, although it does lead one to conclude that Holmes was the one to embalm Lincoln's body. In truth, it was Henry P. Cattell, who publicly disputed the story that Holmes embalmed Lincoln, see: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045462/1901-10-08/ed-1/seq-14/;words=Cattell+Henry?date1=1862&rows=20&searchType=basic&state=&date2=1902&proxtext=Henry+Cattell&y=9&x=16&dateFilterType=yearRange&index=7

In mortuary science school as a student, we all learned about the father of embalming. We learned about how the war dead and how they were preserved for a trip home to their families. Preservation for a short term gives families an opportunity to hold a proper funeral service for them. Even to day, many people find out you are a mortician they start to asked a lot of questions about your job; particular embalming. I just tell them that embalming is not secret; it is a normal way of preserving the deceased for a while but not forever. Then they want to know how embalming is done; I just tell them that we use the circulatory system to do this process; because you don't want to cause people to stay on that subject by what you tell them if you go through the long process explaining step by step procedures. I also tell them that it is normal and it is a clean process. Our preparation room is like a hospital operation room, clean, and neat and we ensure that it remains clean and presentable on a routine basis. We study a lot of subjects and we do not use them all but those are the requirements that we must take. I think we need not take so many subjects in the field if we are never to use them in our profession.
