I'd just like to comment that the comparison made with female perceptions of math ability doesn't seem to be a really good fit. For one thing, while there may be some physical inequalities between genders when it comes to pull ups, there are zero inherent inequalities in mathematics. Additionally, I think that the subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle messages discouraging girls in math are probably a lot more pervasive, and ultimately more important to get rid of, than ones about upper body strength.

Thank you SO much for writing this article. This article is inspiring. I am a woman in my mid-thirties who does pullups several times a week. I couldn't do a single pullup 5 years ago, but I practiced pullups - jumping pullups, pullups with a band, negative pullups until I got them. I feel sorry for the woman who wrote the NYT article and the yahoo blogger if they actually believe what they wrote.

Thank you, my thoughts exactly when I read that post. I started crossfit 2 years ago and could not even hang from the bar. I did not give up and right about at the 23 month marker, I got my first dead hang pull up EVER!!! I am 47 years old! Now a month later, I can do 3 dead hand pull ups, and completed FRAN rxd.... one pull up at a time! Thank u for setting the record straight! it took 2 years ladies but it will happen, do not give up!

Thank you for your response to that other article.
And thank you most of all for providing inspiration, rather than the limits, excuses as described in the other article.
Kudos!
