I have noticed that there is a human limitation with animal studies. As a person I make a different type of connection to my pet, than some humans do to their theirs. In close observation of this group of people the relationship with their family is much like I observed with the pet.

Some people just don't seem to make, what I would call a connection, to either humans or pets. How can they possibly observe the nuances that show the animals percection, when they monitor them like they would a inanimate object. Even when they own the pet they still do not make the same connection so their observations seem rather unrealistic.

I have read dozens of dog related books that made. Me wonder if they actually even had a dog. Now I think that some people refer to dogs as just a product like a cow or chicken not a domesticated pet. But I as well believe that we minimize most non human contact, this is what allows us to continue to kill, what we think are trivial living things.

Personally I have seen my dog be clever as she knows my schedule and where I am in the house at given times and seemingly take advantage of that to obtain something I don't want her to have but she does. Kind of like a adolescent child.

Look closely at the world around you, most of us are so glued to our computers that we can't see beyond our own small circle.
